“Custom cakes are about 25 percent of the business, so we were glad to have more space,” said Dwight Miller, who operates Miller’s Bakery with his brother, David. “There is nothing like seeing it and tasting it live.”

Both Tenafly natives, the Miller brothers bought what had been a speciality dress shop for two decades next door. They've added new shelves to show off model displays of cakes for birthdays, weddings, and other events.

“People are getting simpler to some extent with their weddings,” Dwight Miller said. “We’re a European bakery so our strength is bavarian cream, and other fillings, all made in the shop.

"We try to keep the fondant thin, so that it doesn’t overpower the taste of the cake.”

To compete with store-bought sales, they post on social media about their boat- and car-shaped cakes, grooms’ cakes and sports inspired designs -- full sculptures that are shipped around the state and into Manhattan.

Their grandfather opened the Anderson Avenue bakery in 1947. The Millers now make anywhere between 10 to 15 cakes each weekend.

“I’ve been coming here for years for the cookies to bring to church socials,” said Regina Pagan. “Many people in the church pick up cakes for the christenings.”

Although they do bake with nuts, the Miller cater to those on gluten-free diets or Muslim couples requesting eggless cakes for their weddings.

“At first we turned people away. And then we realized we had to keep up with the times," Dwight Miller said. "My brother is very good with it. It’s kind of a science.”

“There’s always a new challenge,” added cake decorator Omar Lopez who shares his designs with more than 25,000 Instagram followers.

"We tell people to bring in as many ideas as we can, and we help them enhance those," Miller said.
